Thank You for Thinking of the Library

Gifts of books and other materials will be accepted by the Friends of the Milwaukee Public Library, a volunteer organization which operates the Bookseller Used Book Store at Central Library. All donations will be considered for sale in the Bookseller or at a used book sale. The Friends will grant back proceeds to the Library to purchase new materials.

When appropriate, desired materials will be routed to a Central Library subject department to be considered for addition to the Library’s collection. Due to the high volume of gift materials and the time associated with handling these materials, the Friends and the Library must be selective about the kinds of materials that will be accepted, and the selection criteria is detailed below.

The Bookseller Used Book Store will consider only those items that are in good condition and may accept the following items for sale:

Fiction and nonfiction, including paperbacks
Children’s fiction, non-fiction, music CDs, DVDs and VHS
Classic literature, including paperbacks
DVDs, music CDs, books on CD and cassette tape, and entertainment VHS
Magazines on health, history, the military, sports and news, celebrities, and autos up to one year old
National Geographic, Life, Look, Saturday Evening Post, Ebony and other collectible magazine titles of any age

The following gifts will be considered for addition to the Library’s collection:

Local area high school yearbooks
Materials in the following categories:
- Rarities/art manuscripts
- Local history
- Great Lakes Marine
- Milwaukee Road
- Genealogy

The Friends and Library cannot accept the following items:

Materials in poor condition including but not limited to:
- Those having a bad smell – smoke, mildew etc.
- Dusty, moldy or water-damaged books
- Books with yellowed, highlighted, missing or torn pages, damaged spines
- Damaged or incomplete audio-visual items

Outdated materials:
- Computer, medical or textbooks older than three (3) years
- Almanacs or encyclopedia yearbooks older than two (2) years
- Items already discarded from any other library
- Video games and computer software
- Old magazines and journals (i.e., business and news magazines over 1 yr old—exceptions listed above)

Donors may leave no more than one box or bag of gifts at any neighborhood library location, or up to two boxes or bags at the Bookseller’s sorting room just inside the 8th Street entrance at Central Library. Donors wishing to leave greater amounts of material must contact the Bookseller directly at 414-286-2142 to make arrangements for delivery.
